Inverted Umlaut Podcast, No. 5: As Slow As Possible

DOWNLOAD THE PODCAST (192kbps MP3)

Some metal and hardcore records just sound better sloooooower. Inspired by producer Shamantis’ surprisingly affecting 35-minute ambient edit of teen pop star Justin Bieber, this week’s Inverted Umlaut turns the crushing grimness of Electric Wizard, Converge, Black Sabbath and others into hour-long bliss-outs using the open-source software PaulStretch. Since each edit is on the long side and the show’s only two hours, I’ve provided full 320kbps MP3 download links for each track below, plus edits that didn’t make it on the show!

Now turn off the lights, plug in your headphones, and zone into the droning darkness. See the full playlist below.

ELECTRIC WIZARD “Funeralopolis (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3
HARVEY MILK “Women Dig It (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3
COBALT “Stomach (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3
BLACK SABBATH “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3
CONVERGE “Jane Doe (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3
THOU “Prometheus (Inverted Umlaut Edit) (excerpt)” MP3

(Incidental music)
FENNESZ, Black Seas [Touch]

(Bonus edits)
DEATHSPELL OMEGA “Bread of Bitterness (Inverted Umlaut Edit)” MP3
SUNN O))) “Big Church (Inverted Umlaut Edit)” MP3

Through the editing process, I discovered that doom/sludge metal provided the best results in PaulStretch. Typically, the doom tracks I put through the program had fuller production or relied more on bass than treble. On the other hand, grind and thrash bands like Napalm Death and Slayer yielded messy, cymbal-heavy experiments that grated on the ears (though I do wish I’d thought to try something from South of Heaven).

Got any of your own metal edits you want to share? Email invertedumlaut [at] gmail [dot] com with a download link and I’ll feature it!
