Agalloch just posted some rarities and B-sides to a new Bandcamp page, mostly ghosts-whispering-in-the-forest acoustic shizz. You know you love it.

The Ten Best Albums of 2011
Stream a damn awesome mix of metal from the Pacific Northwest at NPR Music. It includes Akimbo, Big Business, Atriarch, Agalloch, Red Fang, Wizard Rifle (pictured), Melvins, Witch Mountain, YOB and so many more. \m/
NPR hired me to shoot Agalloch’s first NYC performance at LPR on March 22nd 2011. These are a few of the outtakes. On a personal note, this was the darkest winter I’ve ever had and the release of Marrow of the Spirit was my small beacon of light. It was a honor for me to capture this concert. Download Agalloch’s first-ever New York City performance at NPR Music. The “savagely beautiful and personal” set culled equally from Marrow of the Spirit and Ashes Against the Grain, but also pulled out some obscure favorites. There’s also a link to download the medieval-like doom metal band Worm Ouroboros’ set from the same night.

Oooh, Agalloch was phenomenal last night at Le Poisson Rouge. Unartig was there to film it, of course. Here’s “Into the Painted Grey.” NPR Music will have the full concert available for download later this week.
I’m starting to get real excited to see Agalloch at Le Poisson Rouge on March 22. Here’s one of my favorite songs from The Mantle performed live, an acoustic dirge gone electric. (And here’s the original, in case you haven’t heard it.)

In 2010, more metal bands sounded like seafood plates: Blackened death, blackened post-hardcore, blackened crust. Not that I’m complaining. The more smart cross-pollination, the better, as far as I’m concerned. The key word here is “smart,” though. When Woe pummels a melodic progression like a Hum-ming Black Wizard, it’s a thoughtful, yet still ass-kicking moment.
But it’s all metal, dammit. It’s the one genre besides opera that can exist in two planes of culture: borderline pretentious, yet beautiful high-art (your Opeths and Deathspell Omegas) and party-hard, dead brain cells low-art (your Municipal Wastes and Kvelertaks). And then there are the brilliant ones that straddle both (your Nachtmystiums). And it’s still hated anyway.
2010 was a great year for metal. Hell, any year is great for metal. What are you doing? Living under a rock?
The podcast above only features audio from the top 15 metal albums of 2010 (forgive the first two minutes of blown-out audio — I cleaned it up the best I could in post-production), but after the jump, I’ve included my top 25 metal albums of the year. DON’T MISS ‘EM.
