Download a Bandcamp compilation of Boston-area metal bands like Revocation, Ramming Speed, Panzerbastard and more from… Boston Phoenix? I know cranky metalheads get weirded out when major media organizations get behind metal, but I love it. Also, I never would have heard the dirgy sludge-death of Blessed Offal without this comp. Kudos.

Download a fantastically diverse mixtape curated by Thou over at Cvlt Nation. It includes everything from Poison Idea and Iron Lung to Cocteau Twins and Mos Def.

I did not have the good fortune of knowing Brendan Majewski or his band Orphan until Majewski tragically took his own life this past January. (Majewski also played bass for local D.C. band Quix*o*tic before they called it quits in 2002.) With so much great music and so many great people making heavy music, it’s hard to keep up, and it’s even harder to discover such talent post-mortem. But the guys behind Krallice knew Majewski and participated in a tribute to his music this past April with Dope Body, Obits and his brother Brian. Krallice has now taken it one step further and released a free 3-song EP of Orphan covers called Orphan of Sickness. It’s a solid release all around, revealing the band’s punk tendencies that have always lurked beneath the surface.
You can stream the EP at Brooklyn Vegan or just download the uncompressed files here.

Download: Ruin Lust and Ash Borer Live 07/13/2011»

charredresistors:

Shit was down, but Tumblr fixed it (thanks!)  This show was the “grand opening” of the Corpse Fortress basement.  Two folks who I like a whole fucking bunch painted the whole thing with skulls and beer cans.  Floor to ceiling.  And put “Corpse Fortress” in a root font on the back wall.  It’s classy now.

Spirals and Ilsa also played.  Spirals sounded perfect, Ilsa is playing new material.  Look for other sets on here for both bands.

Ruin Lust - never heard ‘em before, but the demo is damn good

Ash Borer - pumped to get a chance to see these guys

Download a disgusting live set from nihilistic black metal punks Raspberry Bulbs, recorded live on WFMU’s My Castle of Quiet. Featuring He Who Crushes Teeth, there’s some stylistic similarities with the drummer’s main band, Bone Awl, but Raspberry Bulbs is way snarlier, like if the Sex Pistols were as dangerous as they wanted everyone to believe.

Download: Braveyoung, The Body w/ The Assembly Of Light Choir, and Ilsa at St. Stephen’s Sanctuary 06/24/2011»

You can watch The Body’s NYC show and now you can download a bootleg of the St. Stephen’s set from D.C. (Photos of the beautiful sanctuary + an interview here.)

charredresistors:

Live, in the Sanctuary of St. Stephens. Echos everywhere. Mic’s quit a bit better than most shows. It sounded / sounds amazing.

Braveyoung - post-rock like later Isis. Perfect for a giant church.

The Body w/ the Assembly Of Light Choir - The Body with a 13 person all-women choir, with half the set being just the choir.  Again, perfect for a church.  There are very little vocals from singer of The Body (but you can hear them) because he has no mic.  He’s screaming over the onslaught of noise that The Body makes.

Ilsa - The guitars and base sound like they are 100ft tall stacks, the drums sound like they were played in a cave, and the singer sounds like the mere act of being in a church is torturous.
