A few photos of Krallice, Thou & Wolves in the Throne Room from their performance at The Bellhouse as part of The Blackened Music Series Presents, in Brooklyn, NY.

I did not have the good fortune of knowing Brendan Majewski or his band Orphan until Majewski tragically took his own life this past January. (Majewski also played bass for local D.C. band Quix*o*tic before they called it quits in 2002.) With so much great music and so many great people making heavy music, it’s hard to keep up, and it’s even harder to discover such talent post-mortem. But the guys behind Krallice knew Majewski and participated in a tribute to his music this past April with Dope Body, Obits and his brother Brian. Krallice has now taken it one step further and released a free 3-song EP of Orphan covers called Orphan of Sickness. It’s a solid release all around, revealing the band’s punk tendencies that have always lurked beneath the surface.
You can stream the EP at Brooklyn Vegan or just download the uncompressed files here.

Nick McMaster of Krallice has contributed an incredibly thoughtful playlist to Stereogum’s Under the Influence series. Stream and read here.

Programming Note: Due to life junk, I won’t have enough time to put together a new Inverted Umlaut show tonight (regularly Mondays 9-11 p.m. ET on Radio CPR). Instead of dead air, I’ll re-run the guest DJ set with Mick Barr (Krallice, Orthrelm). With over 200 downloads, it’s IU’s most popular podcast! You can download the podcast directly and see the playlist here.

(Note: Since the airing of this show, Mick Barr has moved back to New York, but still loves D.C.)

Inverted Umlaut Podcast, No. 19: Guest DJ Mick Barr Of Krallice, Orthrelm, Ocrilim

DOWNLOAD THE PODCAST (192kpbs MP3)

Mick Barr is a master shredder who’s a little more Master Magicians of Jajouka than he is Steve Reich… or at least that what he tells me in his first-ever radio interview.

Among many of his projects (Orthrelm, Ocrilim, Oldest, to name just a few), Krallice is probably his best known band at this point, changing the face of black metal even as that term has less meaning as time goes on. Diotima, out April 26 on Profound Lore, continues in Krallice’s domination. Between some of Mick’s metal, folk-trance and free-jazz picks, we talked about why he loves Washington, D.C. more than New York City, and why he hears more melody in his shredfests than I do.

KRALLICE “Energy Chasms,” Krallice [Profound Lore]
INFESTED BLOOD “Gate to Alien Dimension,” Interplanar Decimation [Gormageddon]*
ORTHRELM “OV (excerpt),” OV [Ipecac]
OCRILIM “Ixoltion,” Purging Trilogy [self-released; Rock in Hell vinyl reissue, 2011]
THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS “Interstellar War,” Cataclysm [ugEXPLODE]
MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA “Sidi Hamid Sherk (Rhaitas),” Master Musicians of Jajouka [Genes]*
JOHN COLTRANE “Mars,” Interstellar Space [Impulse!]*
DARKTHRONE “Ev Vind Av Sorg,” Panzerfaust [Moonfog]
DRAUGNIM “Craionhorn,” Northwind’s Ire [Spikefarm]*
